History of Mask Today if you ask anyone what a mask is, they will tell you that it is what you wear on your face to protect yourself from Covid – 19. But that’s just one dimension of it. Masks have a rich and varied history. During the plague in Europe, centuries ago doctor’s device masks to protect themselves while treating the same. These were scary looking contraptions that covered your entire face and had a beak like protrusion over the nose making the wearer look like a demonic bird. These beak were filled with herbs. It was believed that breathing in the fragrance protected you from disease. Masks have not just been used for protection but as disguise and performance for entertainment and rituals. The most iconic mask of 21 st century popular culture is the one from the 2005 film “Bees for Vendetta” based on the graphic novel from the 80's. This mask is a version of the Guy Fawkes mask.
